Fall Garden Growing Tips

Fall Garden TipsFall is my favorite time in the garden. With successive crop planting you can be doing all phases of gardening on the same day. Most all vegetables can be grown and actually do very well as the rains and the bugs have let up a bit. As long as you do not get an early freeze or frost, gardening in the Fall can be very productive. Even if the cold weather does approach, you can cover many crops. This, of course, does depend on your hardiness zone.

The first and most important item to consider when growing a Fall garden is to plant the vegetable varieties that are most suited for Fall conditions. We have chosen vegetable varieties for the Fall Seasonal Garden Kit that will flourish in the in cooler weather. In the Fall these vegetables will typically grow rapidly at first and gradually slow as the days become shorter and colder. We like to grow squash and beans in the fall so we can harvest right before Thanksgiving and then can the rest. It is very rewarding to be able to provide your own food for the Thanksgiving feast.

Fall vegetables don’t require much special care; in fact you’ll spend less time caring for your fall crops because of the favorable autumn growing conditions. Also destructive insects won’t be as numerous, nor create as much of a problem as they can during the summer. The most common fall insect pest may be aphids, which fortunately won’t cause much of a problem to the growth or production of healthy plants.

Your garden weed control is much easier in the fall because the weeds will germinate less frequently and grow slower than they do during the warmer growing seasons. Depending on you hardiness zone, fall usually brings an increase in the amount of precipitation, eliminating another time consuming garden chore of irrigating the garden.

With just a little attention and effort you may be surprised to find that growing fall vegetables in the backyard garden is even more enjoyable than planting a vegetable garden during the spring and summer seasons.

For the best soil possible in any hardiness zone we advocate Woodchip Gardening. You can learn more about this amazing God-given technique through the Back to Eden project. The steps that they list are suggestions, not instructions, based on Paul Gautschi’s experiences with creation and the Creator. They encourage people everywhere to spend time in the garden. Feel free to experiment, follow your intuition, learn from your mistakes, adapt to your local environment, and ultimately let God direct you on your journey back to Eden!
